My favorite metaphor – for life and for therapy -- is ‘journey.’ Sometimes we know exactly where we are going, how we want to get there, who is going with us. At other times we feel lost, in need of new maps or less baggage, longing for a better connection to our traveling companions.
In a therapy session, I am attentive to thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and the relationship to self as well as to others. Understanding your past is an important step to understanding today, even as we address present concerns and problems. I use a blend of cognitive, interpersonal, and expressive psychotherapy models. For some clients, practices like mindfulness or meditation are helpful.
The process is collaborative and interactive. Together, we make space for you to pause and consider the events and choices that have led you to the present moment. Gaining a new perspective will help prepare you for changes you may want or need to make. Over time, the therapy process is a path for becoming more creative, hopeful, effective and resiliant.
Finding the right therapist is important. I encourage you to read the information on this website and then contact me with your questions. Talk to several therapists before making a decision, and don’t hesitate to make a change if you don’t feel a good ‘fit’ after two or three sessions.
